FAQ’s

Why does gas cost so much more on the island?

A couple of reasons:  volume/investment & transportation.

Believe it or not, there are mainland stations that do an annual volume equivalent to all of the fuel bought in the San Juans including marine and land based.  Their investment is a fraction of the investment in the islands.  More gallons, less investment = lower prices.

Transportation is the other big difference.  Mainland stations call for deliveries in whatever volume they need.  A supplier delivers the product and leaves.  In the islands, we own the trucks that pick up the product at the refinery.  We buy the time on the landing craft or ferry to move the truck to and from the island.  It takes us a day and lots of equipment with all the attendant costs to do what a mainland station can do with a phone call and no capital investment.

Why should I buy from IPS?

All of the above coupled with the fact that we never stop trying to get better.  We frequently ask customer for their thoughts.  We try new things.  All of them don’t work but many do.  Over the years our effort has been to do more with less and not compromise the quality of our service or product.

What credit card do you recommend?

The Shell MasterCard is hard to beat.  It offers a 5% (percent) discount for all purchases of gasoline.  In today’s world that is 20 cents a gallon and growing.  That comes from Shell so we like it, too.  If you have multiple cardholders and purchase over 200 gallons a month, the IPS card is a good way to go.  We offer discounts for volume and it works round the clock.

Do I need a permit to purchase off road fuel?

Not any more.  Under the current rules the end user is responsible for being sure that off road fuel is used for off road purposes.  This is monitored and the fines are meaningful for misuse.

What is with the changes in diesel fuel?

The EPA is working to reduce acid rain by reducing the sulfur content of fuel.  At IPS our on road fuel is Ultra Low Sulfur which has a content of 15 ppm (parts per million) sulfur or less.  It is blended with 20% biodiesel.  We had a lab test the product and it was approximately 12 ppm.

Why should I buy branded fuel?

It is all about additives.  Many people scoff at the idea that additives matter.  Stop by the office and take a look at our “gunk” display.  It shows two valves out of a specially designed engine.  One side of the engine used Shell, the other an unbranded product.  The difference is remarkable.

Does the fuel pier have temporary moorage?

No, but the Port does.  Just ask whomever is assisting you to point you in the right direction.

Do you have air and water at the station?

Yes, and there is no charge for either.

What if I need help fueling my car?

We are here to help Monday – Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.  Many of our customers just give us a “toot” of their horn when they arrive and we fuel their vehicles for them.
